The tick while walking in Belgium
Belgium has many beautiful natural areas that invite you to walk, but the only disadvantage is the many ticks that roam these green places. The ticks in Belgium, just like in the Netherlands, are a great danger and are sometimes infected with the Borrelia virus. There is therefore a chance that a tick will transmit Lyme disease after biting.
Belgium and Lyme disease
In the various nature reserves in Belgium, people regularly contract Lyme disease. This disease is characterized by a red circular spot at the site of the tick bite and causes fever and flu-like symptoms. In a later stage, pain develops in the joints, the nervous system and sometimes in the heart. In rare cases, Lyme can even be fatal. The disease can be treated with a course of antibiotics.
Risk areas in Belgium
In principle, the tick can be found everywhere in Belgium in places where there is a lot of green. However, there are a number of places where it has been proven that significantly more people are infected with Lyme disease after a tick bite. The Antwerp Kempen, Limburg Kempen, East Cantons, the Sonian Forest and the Ardennes are called the risk areas. It is therefore wise to take extra measures in these areas.
