The tick while walking in Italy

Not only in the Netherlands, but also in Italy they have to deal with ticks that can transmit terrible diseases by biting. It is therefore wise to protect yourself extra well against ticks if you go for a walk in the open air in Italy, for example. Especially in the north of Italy and in coastal areas it is full of these sickening creatures.

Sign along the coast in Italy

It is also not entirely safe along the Italian coast, because there are also many ticks there. The tick species Rhipicephalus is mainly found in countries around the Mediterranean Sea and transmits the disease Fièvre Boutonneuse there. These ticks live in places with a lot of greenery and in warm and humid places, so they can also survive in the house. They are also often found on rodents, antelopes, cattle or pets.
The virus that this tick spreads is characterized by an ulcer with a black scab at the site of the bite, where a red discoloration also occurs. After this, complaints such as headache, muscle pain and joint pain often occur and this is usually accompanied by low blood pressure and sometimes with neurological abnormalities and disruption of kidney function. After about five to seven days, a fever occurs, which can last for several days to two weeks. After five days, red spots usually also appear on the body. There is no vaccine against this disease, but there is a course of antibiotics available.
